Monday Mojo – Connect the Word

If you had to describe yourself in one word what would it be?

I don’t just mean how you’re feeling, I mean a descriptor that might define you. Nine months ago, you  might easily have said, for example: enthusiastic, driven or focused.

I’m asking because you might not be feeling those things right now, and maybe even a little lost. When life presents us with different challenges, we can feel disconnected from who we are and what we want. And I’m not just talking about COVID.

Whenever you’ve started a new job, or you’ve invested in a relationship that’s then broken down, you’ll know what I mean when I say you start to question what you bring to the party. You might even be one of the people I know who, as a child, wanted a new name because the one they were given didn’t seem “good enough”. (The video underneath this article explains). It’s like we disconnect from who we are, based on what we think others want us to be, to help us fit in.

There’s no “right” word to describe you of course, or it might change from one day to the next. And if there was one that defines us all it’s probably “unique”. Each of us brings something special to the conversation.

The problem is when we start to hold back or feel silenced; things like Imposter Syndrome kick in. We start to armour up, rather than process our vulnerability, and we lose our mojo for saying what needs to be said for fear we might be rejected, misunderstood or simply not heard.

So what do we do?

This week, set the intention to Connect the Word. This article describes ways to discover who you are and what you want. For example, you might think about plans you can realistically make, even with COVID restrictions, which might include building your support network (which I call your tribe). There are new ways to connect with people online, such as virtual meet ups and online courses. You might reflect on times when you felt carefree or calm, and ask yourself what positive action you can take to achieve that again. Or you might, if you haven’t already, started to think about what really matters and how you can do more of what you love. Listen to the whisper of what you know you’re capable of, and before too long you’ll find your way.
