What is getting your time and attention right now?
It might be work. It might be a relationship. Or it might be a cause close to your heart. For some, it’s raising money for worthwhile charities. For others, it’s helping people in need.
But what if one of your worthwhile causes was you? By that, I mean what if you put energy, inspiration and importance in to your well-being as you do into helping others.
Author and speaker Simon Sinek talks about “Just Cause”: that’s the reason for doing what you do, what gives your life meaning – what got you out of bed this morning. He suggests that ‘Just Cause’ is one element in playing what he calls “the Infinite Game” – recognising that it’s not the winning or losing in life that really counts, but the journey along the way.
Infinite thinkers recognise the value they bring, whilst being focused on where they’re going, and making the world a better place.
He says an essential part of championing that cause is being focused on continuous improvement – not in a constant “doing” sort of way, but by striving towards what makes you tick. In the context of his talks he’s talking about leadership, which to me has to include taking care of yourself.
This week, set the intention to Embrace the Infinite. Imagine for a moment, that your vision for the future has come true. That your life is where you want it to be, and that you’re the picture of health and well-being. Where would you be? Who would you be with? (What would you be wearing?) Then consider if the path you’re currently on will get you there; if not, what steps can you take? It might be practical changes in lifestyle, or starting a new course. It might be, on an emotional level, learning how to trust again. And if you don’t have a vision for the future yet, see if you can find one. If someone else shares a vision of the world you want to live in, you can always choose that for now.
