Self-Care

Looking after ourselves during and after a difficult time can be really hard, but focusing on our health is more important than ever to help us find our way through this experience.

Well-being is better understood when we take a holistic view. Rather than seeing people as a selection of problems, we can look at each person as a whole human, with a number of different factors that influence how they show up in the world, and that can help them fulfil their potential.

Wellness can then be split into two categories:

Internal: the things we may be doing that aren’t helping (like unhealthy habits) and what we could do differently to help ourselves. This can then be split further into “pillars” if wellness which look at our wellbeing as a complete picture. This includes things like our physical health, our mindset and our spiritual health. To some extent we will have control over these areas and the choices we make.

External: the things that have happened or are happening to us, over which we have very little control. There may still be some choices, like choosing when to safely walk away, but these may need to be planned carefully with the help of loved ones, community or professionals.

Important things to remember can include (articles open in the Helping You Sparkle™ magazine):

  • It can help to take care of the basics, for example prioritising eating and sleeping well, especially on the bad days.
  • It’s important to set boundaries, and find ways to say no that feel safe and comfortable.
  • Ask for help. Whether it’s a close friend or a professional, grow your tribe to be as supportive network so that even when things are difficult, there’s someone there to lend a hand. Here’s a list of links that might help.

Above all, be compassionate with yourself. It’s not easy being gentle with ourselves, especially if we’ve had experiences of people being unkind. Try to be nice to yourself anyway. You might find affirmations or compassion statements helpful.
