What is Mindfulness?
“Meditation is simply about being yourself and knowing something about who that is. Mindfulness has to do with…questioning our view of the world and our place in it. Most of all it has to do with being in touch.” Jon Kabat-Zinn
Have you ever driven your car to work and not remembered the journey? If you didn’t, this can be described as “automatic pilot”; we behave without thinking, as if we didn’t choose what would happen next. Mindfulness is about you being in the driving seat of what you think about and how you respond consciously, to what’s happening around you.
When I ask people what stops them relaxing, and particularly meditating, they usually say one of three things:
- They don’t have time to do it
- They don’t know how to do it (or have tried and found it difficult)
- It’s just not on their radar
There is a famous Zen saying that if you have time to meditate, you should meditate for 20 minutes. If you don’t have time to meditate, you should meditate for an hour – the point being that the less time you have, the more you need to relax. People often try, but believe that meditation is about clearing the mind. I reassure people that in the 21st Century, that’s very hard to do. Only Buddhist monks and nuns (for example) who have been meditating for decades experience what’s known as ‘the gap’ – the moment when the mind is completely clear. Mindfulness encourages you to accep you have a noisy mind, instead of trying to empty it – it’s about training the mind, and being in control of it, rather than it controlling you.
The benefits of mindfulness also include managing stress, improving sleep and reducing blood pressure. I have a dedicated resource on Mindfulness called Kindfully. You can find out more about latest classes here.
