Monday Mojo – Reclaim Your Power

How powerful do you feel today?

Let’s be honest, by the time Monday comes round, we can feel exhausted.

In the ‘old days’ the working week was clearly defined for many people: Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 and the weekends were reserved for rest and relaxation.  But today it’s not that simple.

The technology we have at our fingertips means we are available to people 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We take calls and answer emails, long after the working day has finished. It’s hard to switch off.

And, because we’re all so busy, the weekends are no longer a playground. It’s when all the jobs get done that couldn’t be done during the week. Sound familiar?

When we’re running on empty, we can start to feel powerless. It can feel like the world is happening to you, instead of with you.  It’s why taking time for rest and relaxation matters, and self-care needs to be part of the routine.

Many people tell me that self-care feels self-indulgent, but that’s because we are socialised to feel that way. It’s in our childhood programming to avoid being seen as lazy, which forms our rule-book in later life, and society endorses it. The good news is, you can re-write those rules.

This week, set the intention to Reclaim Your Power. If you feel guilty taking time for yourself, ask yourself why and where that comes from – who told you that your health matters less than everyone else? Try to challenge any thinking that doesn’t serve you well. If it feels more comfortable, start small with your self-care plan: take five to read a magazine, run yourself a warm bath, or treat yourself to something lovely. But remember, that to take care of yourself is how you take your power back.
